Where Kelowna Customers Find Local Businesses
You have the website. Probably the Google profile. Here is everything else a Kelowna business should be listed in, joined to, or known by, and which ones are worth the time. This is a small town. The channels that work here are the local ones, and most of them are free or close to it.
- Google Business Profile, verified, with real photos. How to get it verified.
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Free, ten minutes each, and they feed the map apps that are not Google.
- Yelp, claimed. Not because Kelowna uses Yelp much, but because the AI assistants and the directory aggregators read it.
- A Facebook page, claimed, with the right hours and phone. It does not need posts. It needs to exist and be correct.
- The same name, address and phone number everywhere. Word for word. This is the whole game.
The rest of this page is the Kelowna layer. The givens tell Google you exist. The local layer tells it, and everyone else, that you are actually here.
City and Region
The most authoritative sources of your business details that exist. Directory sites copy from these.
| Channel | What it does for you | Cost | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Kelowna Business Licence | Required by law, and the licence puts you in the City's public licence search and its open-data feed. Aggregators pull from this, so the name and address on the licence become the name and address everywhere. Get it right here before anywhere else. | Licence fee | You |
| City of West Kelowna Business Directory | The West Kelowna equivalent, published by the City for licensed businesses there. | With licence | You |
| Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission | Not a directory. The regional district's business support office, with startup resources, data and referrals to the programs below. Worth one visit. | Free | You |
Local Media
Kelowna reads these. A listing here is a local link from a site people actually use, which is worth more than fifty national directories.
| Channel | What it does for you | Cost | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| KelownaNow Business Directory | The largest local directory attached to a news site people read daily. Search for your business, claim it or create the profile, fill in everything. Their annual Best of Kelowna vote runs off this directory, so being listed is the entry ticket. | Free, paid upgrades | You or me |
| Castanet | The Okanagan's biggest news site. It has no business directory. Where it earns a place on this list is news: a genuine opening, expansion, award or community story sent to the newsroom can become a local article that links to you. Classifieds are free and the ads are paid. | Free to pitch | You |
| Okanagan Edge | Business news for the valley. New businesses, hires, moves and milestones are exactly what it covers. Send a short plain email with a photo. | Free to pitch | You or me |
| Kelowna Capital News and Daily Courier | The two papers. Both take community submissions and both still print. Same rule as Castanet: pitch real news, not a launch announcement dressed up as news. | Free to pitch | You |
| InfoTel Directory | Regional directory for Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon, run alongside iNFOnews. Listings carry a live link to your site. Placement is through InfoTel Multimedia, and it is a sales conversation rather than a self-serve form. | Paid | You |
Chambers and Business Associations
Paid memberships, but each one comes with a member directory listing, a link from a well-established local site, and a room full of people who refer work. Join the one for where you actually are.
| Channel | What it does for you | Cost | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kelowna Chamber of Commerce | Member directory listing, events, and the affinity discounts that the Chamber says offset the fee. The directory is well indexed. Check the current fee on their site, it depends on business size. | Annual fee | You |
| Downtown Kelowna Association | If your address is inside the downtown improvement area you are already a member and already paying through your taxes. Claim the free business listing on their site. Most downtown businesses never do. | Included | You |
| Uptown Rutland Business Association | The Rutland equivalent. Smaller, and for Rutland businesses it is the group that knows the neighbourhood. | Membership | You |
| Tourism Kelowna | For anything a visitor might use: food, drink, lodging, activities, retail. A member listing gets ten photos, a description, a map pin and brochure space at the Visitor Centre. Non-tourism businesses can take part as advertisers. | Annual fee | You |
| Greater Westside Board of Trade | West Kelowna and Westbank's chamber, under a different name. Same deal: directory, events, referrals. | Annual fee | You |
| Lake Country Chamber, Penticton & Wine Country Chamber, Greater Vernon Chamber, Peachland Chamber | One each for the other towns. If you serve those areas, the local chamber directory is a stronger signal than any national listing. Vernon's directory, The Local List, is unusually well built. | Annual fee | You |
Networking and Facebook Groups
This is not social media marketing. Nobody is asking you to post content. These are the rooms where Kelowna business owners ask "does anyone know a good..." and somebody answers with your name.
| Channel | What it does for you | Cost | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kelowna Business Development Network | A weekly in-person group of owners and professionals. The old-fashioned kind of referral network, and in a town this size it still works. | Membership | You |
| Business Alliance Network | West Kelowna and Kelowna networking, organised through Facebook. Connect, refer, show up. | Free | You |
| Kelowna Home Based Business and Small Business | A Facebook group for owners. Join, read the rules, answer questions in your trade when they come up, and let your profile do the rest. Group activity changes, so check it is still alive before counting on it. | Free | You |
| Kelowna Networking | Same idea, general business audience. Same advice. | Free | You |
| Okanagan Business Network | Meetup-based, aimed at solo and home-based operators. Useful if that is you. | Free | You |
If You Are Starting Out
Not listings. The people who help you get a business off the ground, and who each have a network of their own.
| Channel | What it does for you | Cost | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Futures Central Okanagan | Loans, the Self-Employment Program, and one-on-one advice for new and small businesses. In Kelowna since 1990. | Free advice | You |
| Accelerate Okanagan | For technology businesses specifically. Mentorship, programs, and the local tech community. | Program based | You |
| Small Business BC | Provincial. Registration, name searches, grants, and a lot of free education. | Mostly free | You |
Why the Local Layer Matters More Than the National One
When Google, or an AI assistant, decides whether to recommend a Kelowna plumber, it is looking for corroboration. Does the business exist, is it where it says it is, and do other sources agree? A listing on a national directory that nobody in Kelowna has heard of is weak corroboration. A listing on the City's licence register, the Chamber's directory and KelownaNow is strong corroboration, because each of those sites is itself unmistakably about Kelowna.
There is a second effect that has nothing to do with search engines. Kelowna is small enough that reputation still travels by mouth. The Chamber breakfast, the Facebook group, the weekly network: these are where "who did your website?" gets asked and answered. A business that is present in those rooms gets named. One that is not, does not.
The Order to Do It In
Write them down exactly as they will appear everywhere: capitals, punctuation, suite number, the whole thing. Every listing from here on copies that line. If the business licence is wrong, fix the licence first, because the City's record is what the aggregators copy.
Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, Facebook. All free, all under an hour, all using the line from step 1. If the Google profile is unverified, read this first, because verification is where most people get stuck.
KelownaNow, and the Downtown Kelowna listing if you are inside the boundary. Fill in every field they offer, and use real photos of your place, not stock.
Kelowna Chamber, Westside Board of Trade, Lake Country Chamber, Tourism Kelowna if visitors are your customers. One is enough to start. Claim the directory listing the same day you join, because that link is half the value.
Not to promote. To be the person who answered when someone asked about your trade. In a group of a few thousand locals, that is how you become the name people suggest.
An opening, a move, a tenth anniversary, a community thing you did. One plain email with a photo to Okanagan Edge and Castanet. Sometimes it runs. When it does, it is the best local link you will ever get.
Listings drift. Someone suggests an edit, a directory changes hands, hours go stale. The printable version has a date column for exactly this reason.
What You Can Do Yourself, and What I Do
Nearly everything on this list is something you can do yourself, and the table says so. Memberships and press pitches need the owner's name on them, so those are yours. Where I come in is the part that is tedious and has to be exact:
- Local Visibility setup covers the givens, the citation audit across the directories, and getting the Google profile verified and complete. One-time.
- Monthly Digital Management is the twice-a-year check in step 7, done monthly, along with the profile posts, photo rotation and reporting.
- New Business Setup is this whole list, done for you, in the weeks before you open.
One exact name-address-phone line. The five givens. KelownaNow. One association. Two groups. Check it twice a year. That is the whole list, and most of it costs nothing but an afternoon.
Common Questions
Which directories should a Kelowna business be listed in?
Beyond Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp: the City of Kelowna business licence register, the KelownaNow business directory, and the member directory of whichever chamber or association covers your location. InfoTel is the paid regional option. Those, with an identical name, address and phone on each, cover what matters locally.
Is the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce worth joining for a small business?
For the directory listing and the referral network, usually yes, if you will actually show up to something. A membership nobody uses is just a listing, and a listing alone is not worth the fee. The Chamber publishes its current fees and member discounts on its own site.
Do Facebook groups still work for local business in Kelowna?
As places to be recommended, yes. As places to advertise, no. The groups on this list are where owners ask for referrals. Answer questions in your trade, keep your profile accurate, and let the recommendations happen. Posting promotions gets you removed.
Does a business licence help with Google ranking?
Indirectly. The City of Kelowna publishes licensed businesses as searchable public data, and directory aggregators copy from it. So the name and address on your licence tend to become the name and address on listings you never created. Getting the licence right is getting those right.
How often should local listings be checked?
Twice a year at minimum. Listings drift through suggested edits, ownership changes at the directory, and stale hours. Monthly if someone is managing the profile anyway.
